To ensure the successful implementation of the Ace it! programs, Sylvan hires highly qualified teachers who undergo a comprehensive initial training program, as well as on-going training. This training focuses on the proprietary Ace it! curricula and strategies and techniques to enhance individual student learning in small group settings. Once tutors become familiar with both the Ace it! Reading and Ace it! Math programs, they are instructed in the most effective way to administer the diagnostic assessments, techniques for diversifying instruction with small groups of students, and how to apply effective motivational strategies. They also learn about how to maintain and update attendance and performance records, safety procedures, and the professional code of ethics.
The initial tutor training is approximately 12 hours in length and includes live and online modules in the following topics:
- Ace it! Tutoring Overview
- Assessment & Orientation
- Student Retention and Small Group Management
- Math Instruction
- Reading Instruction
- Inquiry & Enrollment
- Ace it! Technology System
As part of the training each tutor receives both an Ace it! Math Teacher’s Manual and Reading Teacher’s Manual, which they review and use to plan and deliver a trial lesson. Sylvan personnel certify tutors once they have demonstrated a very good command of the Ace it! curricula and small group teaching techniques.
Once tutors begin teaching, they are regularly observed and evaluated by Sylvan personnel. Additional training is offered to tutors who may need to refine their skills further. In addition tutors are required to attend regular staff development meetings on topics that include the latest research and techniques, new educational materials, modifications in instructional methods, motivational techniques and quality assurance.
