Consonant Blends - Final Blends

Objectives
Student will be able to:
  • recognize final consonant blends.
  • identify letters that stand for final consonant blends.
  • apply phonetic rules to decode words with final consonant blends.

Introduction
Sometimes two or more consonants are blended together to make a consonant blend. Consonant blends can be found at the beginning, middle, or end of a word. You can hear all the sounds in a consonant blend. If a consonant blend is at the end of a word, it is called a final blend.

Examples

Look at the following picture of a raft.

The /f/ sound and the /t/ sound are at the end of the word raft. When they are blended together, they make the final blend /ft/. The letters ft stand for that blend.

Here are examples of more final blends.

Look at the following picture. Say the word milk. What letters stand for the final blend?

Do you hear the final blend /lk/ at the end of the word milk? The letters lk stand for that blend.


Look at these pictures. Say the final blend you hear in each.

                

Do you hear /lt/ at the end of belt? The letters lt stand for that final blend.

Did you hear /mp/ at the end of stamp? The letters mp stand for that final blend.


Words that rhyme usually have the same final blend. Say the names of these pictures. What final blend do you hear?

                                   

Do you hear the final blend sounds /ng/ at the end of the words ring and king? The blend is spelled ng.
